Los Angeles is served by a massive network of freeways and highways. Although it has a reputation for traffic congestion, the average travel time for commuters is shorter than other major cities. Interstate 5 runs south through San Diego to Mexico and north through Sacramento, Portland and Seattle to Canada. The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) enrolls more than 640,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade at more than 900 schools and 187 public charter schools.
